Building Character

As a world class athlete, I understand the value of focus, vision and dedication. Through my personal development journey I came to realize that these same characteristics could be applied to all areas of my life to realize the same success I had had a six-time gold medal winner. This, The Gold Medal Mindset, became the foundation of the message I share as a speaker, author and coach.

As a parent, I work to instill these same values in my children to enable them to reach the level off success that they one day will strive for. One of the best ways for children to develop these characteristics is through success in youth sports, and structured settings that provide for competition, advancement and achievement. For this reason my children take part in year round sports like soccer, basketball, baseball and of course our family activity of competitive water skiing. For more structure and discipline they take part in TKD (TaeKwonDo) and today began as a Los Angles County Junior Life Guard.

As Jr Lifeguard, they do a lot of conditioning and physical activity where they will learn to push themselves beyond pain, fatigue and doubt. They will compete in traditional lifeguard competitions, where positive pier pressure of competition will push them work harder. They will learn discipline and team work in a relaxed-militant core like setting. They will learn valuable safety and lifesaving strategies and skills to both survive and assist others, and they will learn the responsibility that comes with power and knowledge to save a life. And best of all they will learn all this while having fun. For an environment that challenges and entertains children is the best environment for learning and developing character.

I love my future champions and world citizens, and look forward to watching them develop and build the character that makes a parent proud!

Timing is Everything

As a speaker, author and a coach in the personal development field I am always looking to fill my mind with new information. To quote Henry Ford, “Anyone who stops learning is old – whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

With that in mind I was listening an audio program from one of my mentors, James Malinchak. He shared a quote about “the difference between salad and garbage is timing”, and then asked who wants salad and who wants garbage.

This underlines an important point about success. Success is the result of taking timely action, and to paraphrase an idea in Napolean Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich”, ‘successful people are decisive by nature’.

So if you have areas in your life you want to change, and I know you do because we all do, I’ll ask you when are you going to start making those changes?

If not now, then when?

Investing in yourself is the best investment you can make, and investing effort in making those desired changes is the best thing you can do. Make today the first day of the rest of your life, and begin the change process today.

The Road To Success Is Paved With Perseverance

“When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this — you haven’t.” – Thomas A. Edison, and to add to that  “You have only exhausted all the possibilities that you have thought of.” ~ Forest Fisher.

As an athlete learning new tricks in my sport, water ski trick skiing, I would try things that often did not seem possible.

Knowing that “to change your results, you must change your actions” I would keep trying different ways of doing a trick until I figured it out. At times it would feel like there were no other possibilities, but through perseverance I would I would discover a way.

One of my mentors, James Malinchak has a saying, “When you see impossible, you should see I AM Possible.”

When you face obstacles in your life remember these quotes and that “The road to success is paved with perseverance.” Forest Fisher – “The Water Ski Guy”

Getting Up One More Time!

It been said, “Success happens just shortly after most people quit.” In fact in the book “Think and Grow Rich,” Napoleon Hill tells of several stories of people who gave up just in time for someone else to reap the rewards. He also shares stories of how perseverance paid off.

When people find out that I am a Six-Time US National Gold Medalist they assume I never fall. My response is no, I just get up more times than my competition.

This is not only true for sports but for life as well. I just finished getting caught up on FaceBook and saw several people comment both negatively and positively regarding their week. Remember that regardless of what happened during the week, it is our choice how we perceive the events, and that “Success means getting up more times than you fall down.” Forest Fisher, “The Water Ski Guy

Power of the Mastermind

Yesterday I met with my RockStar Mastermind Group. It is a collection of entrepreneurs and business owners who are looking to improve their marketing efforts. Fortunately our group is a great mix of individuals with vastly varying background so collectively they bring a lot of perspective to the group.

For those who may not be familiar with a Mastermind Group, the idea is to bring 2 or more people together to brain storm an issue and thus creating a “mastermind” to look at the issue and suggest ideas that you as an individual might not think of.

Mastermind sessions can be structured in many different ways. Yesterday our group was an all day session with each member taking an allotted amount of time in front of the group and would ask the group for their help and perspective regarding whatever issues they were facing.

As a member of a good group here are five ways you can benefit:

1)    you get the perspective of likeminded individuals

2)   helping other member of the group with their issues sharpens your own thought process

3)   hearing the ideas of the other members of the group with regards to both your own issues and others issues helps to challenge and change you own thought process

4)   accountability

5)   you responsibility to the group pushes you to perform at a higher level

Remember, “you can accomplish more as a team”. Forest Fisher, “The Water Ski Guy”

D.B.A. – Dream It! Believe It! Achieve It!

My success mantra is “Dream It! Believe It! Achieve It!”.

Why, because it spells out the steps to success so simply.

See finding success depends on three things:

1) You must have a dream, a goal, a vision. In other words you must know what you want.

2) You must have the correct mindset and believe that your dreams, goals and visions are possible, and that YOU WILL achieve them.

3) You must take action to move toward you goal.

With the right resources and support this formula will produce successful results for you, in fact it will guarantee success.

Remember, “Success begins with a dream and is realized by taking action.” Forest Fisher, “The Water Ski Guy”

And live my success mantra: “Dream It! Believe It! Achieve It!” Forest Fisher, “The Water Ski Guy”

Gratitude

I have written before about happiness and how it is a choice, meaning you can choose to be happy or not. In fact you do choose your level of happiness. If you are sad it is because you chose either on a conscious or sub-conscious level to respond to the world in the way that you do, and likewise if you are happy it is because you chose to be so.

Finding true happiness is about controlling your perspective. One perspective you have a chose over is your level of gratitude. There were a lot of things in my life that I use to take for granted. Then on February 28th 2004, while training a few weeks before I was to go to Peru to compete with the US Water Ski Team in the Pan-American Championships, I had a bad crash off the water ski ramp. In fact it was about a 160-foot flight through the air, with the first half going great and then it fell apart. You know how people watch hockey for the fights and NASCAR for the crashes; well this was one of those crashes. I injured both ankles, put a 3” gash in shin (you could see the bone), and shattered my heel bone. I was told I would never walk again. WOW that changed my perspective on life.

Sure it was a trying time. My marriage was challenged, but through it all I learnt a new lesson about perspective and gratitude. I was grateful for simple things like walking from my hospital bed in the living room to my wheel chair so I could eat dinner at the table. I was grateful I could hug and kiss my children.

After months of therapy and a LOT of determination I was grateful to be able to walk with a significant limp. Over the next few years I’ve learnt to walk so most people didn’t notice, but occasionally it flares up and become noticeable.

There are so many things I take the time to be grateful for now that I use to think nothing of before. I challenge you to find new things every day that you can be grateful for as well. As you do, I bet you will also become a consistently happier person as well, because gratitude become contagious and produces the symptom of happiness.

Your actions determine your results!

Have you ever noticed that the actions you take impact the outcome of an event? In other words what you choose to do or choose not to do will set in motion your actions, and those actions will lead to a given set of results.

It has been said that “insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.” What that really means is that “To change your results, you must change your actions!”, Forest Fisher, “The Water Ski Guy”

With that in mind what changes do you need to make in order to get what you want out of life?

Perspective for the Past and Present, and Attraction for the Future!

In recent years there has been a lot of talk about the “Law of Attraction”, though it is often misunderstood. Some think that it means that you don’t have to do anything other than think positive thoughts.

The reality is it takes a lot more than just positive thinking to be successful, though it is a vital part of success. In fact I refer to this as the Gold Medal Mindset.

Positive thinking is the foundation of success. It is about perspective. Your perspective about events from your past and your present will determine your happiness. It is also about attracting success in your future.

“If you look for the bad stuff you will find it all around you, if you look for the good things in life you will surely find them.” — Forest Fisher — “The Water Ski Guy”

Happiness Is A Choice

On this glorious Memorial Day were we take time to remember all of those who have and do serve our country and protect our freedom, I also want to encourage you to remember something else…
