Wow… Can you say Final Four shocker?

Before the madness started, March Madness that is, there was talk that this year there were 4 strong #1 teams in the Men’s NCAA Basketball tournament, and that all four #1 teams should advance to the final-four.

Now we are done with the Round of Eight and here we are with none of the #1 seeds advancing to the final four. In fact none of the #2 seeds managed to advance either. So here we are with history in the making. This is the first time a final four game has had two teams seeded 8 and lower.

Saturday we are going to see #3 UCONN (University of Connecticut) vs #4 UK (University of Kansas) and #8 Butler vs #11 VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University). That just goes to show that on any given day any team can triumph….

Every Olympic athlete, self-made millionaire, self-made billionaire, CEO and in my case Six-Time Gold Medalist knows that you don’t do it alone. Yes, there are moments along the road to success where you may appear to be doing it alone, like the moment of crossing the finish line or standing atop the medal podium or standing on stage as a profession public speaker influence lives, but the truth is that was not the moment that created the success. That is just the moment that the success is realized.

Along the same vein there are not any over night success. Success is a long process that some times results in the overnight realization of success.

In both these scenarios there are many people along the way that helped to create the opportunities to realize the eventual moment of success.

And yesterday was no different, when I reached out to my social network and asked people to send my son birthday wishes for his 10th birthday by posting comments to his blog. Because the village stepped up he had a number of people leave birthday messages (and more still coming in) on his blog, which he thought was the coolest thing.

Remember you don’t become a success on your own, “It Takes a Village”. Reach out to the village when you are in need of help, and become the village to help others reach their desired success.

“It Don’t Matter If You’re Black Or White” … “If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place – Take A Look At Yourself And Then Make A Change – I’m Starting With The Man In The Mirror”. Today is a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, a pop icon who touched the world like few have. The first time I heard those lyrics back in 1988 I found it very thought provoking, and I encourage you to allow Michael Jackson’s legacy to live on through the pursuit of personal growth. Remember Michael Jackson was more than just an entertainer, he worked to make the world a better place.

To continue this theme with some more thought provoking quotes…

“Be the change you want to see.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi.

“Success Starts with Attitude” ~ James Malinchak

“Change begins with thought, and is sustained through your mindset.” ~ Forest Fisher ~ “The Water Ski Guy”.

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” ~ Maria Robinson

What changes would you like to see?

Remember, “To change your results you must change your actions!” ~ Forest Fisher ~ “The Water Ski Guy”.

July 1st, the first day of the 3rd quarter of the year or 2nd half of the year… is the perfect time to revisit your goals, plan and progress. If your life is on track so far that is great and keep it up, though if you are not completely happy with your life progress for this year now is the perfect timing to make “a fresh start”.

A business strategy that I learnt from one of my mentors, Eric Lofholm, is to develop an annual business plan and then to revisit that plan each quarter. I’ve taken this same concept and applied it to my life planning process for both myself and my life coaching and business-coaching clients. Based on that, July 1 is the perfect time to reassess your progress (in both life and business) for the year so far, and use the 1st day of the 3rd quarter to make any needed or desired adjustments.

Are your goals still pertinent?

Do you need to release your self from any obligations that are no longer relevant?

Do you have any new goals or obligations that you wish to add to your plan?

One more step I encourage you to take right now is leading up to the beginning of the 4th quarter, October 1st, schedule a little time on your calendar in mid to late September to reassess your progress for the year and make any life/business plan adjustments prior to the 4th quarter. This quarterly strategy will help you stay the course in pursuing your goals and the success that you deserve.

Side note… quarterly is a great time to schedule a rest period, sort of like New Years, and if you ever find yourself off course any day is a good day for “a fresh start”.

You have heard of someone being referred to as “an overnight success”, right? Well it is true, all success occurs in an instant, but what is often overlooked or not known nor seen is all the effort that came before the moment of instantaneous success.

Now sometimes success comes more quickly than other times, but it always is the result of preparation and effort that preceded the moment of identified success. For both my sons, this weekend, they had separate breakthrough moments where they became successful in acquire a new trick on their trick skis (a sub event in tournament water skiing). Their success happened in an instant, though it was created over time based on the foundation of all their previous knowledge and skills that had been developed over time through practice.

This is similar to what Daniel Coyle, author of “The Talent Code”, says about hard work preceding success and how very few, if anyone, is naturally talented. The idea is that your life experiences have prepared you for success to come more easily in certain areas of your life than in other areas, and regardless of the area with the right training, coaching and practice you can and will produce the desired outcome,. Success!

Daniel Coyle goes on to explain that with the right coach the learning curve can be dramatically reduced. This is why my water ski clients ask me to help them to become champion water skiers, and my life-coaching and business-coaching clients seek my expertise on how to develop and apply the Gold Medal Mindset.

Some times what feels like being in over your head is really just the push you needed to step up to the next level. On the way home from the LA County Jr Lifeguard campout today, I took my 2 boys out surfing at C-Street in Ventura. The surf was about 1-4 foot. Not that big unless you are 6 and laying down on a boogie board or 9 and laying on a surfboard for the first time paddling around in the surf and responsible for keeping yourself in the right (safe) place.

At times I could see an expression of concern on their faces as a bigger waves would roll in from the outside and I’d tell them to paddle out fast before the wave caught them in the wrong place. Or when a big one would come in and I’d tell them to turn around and take this one. You could see the hesitation in their eyes as they would start to go, but at the other end of the ride all you could see was a big smile on their face as they had stepped up and concurred what had started out as something they thought of as being in over their head.

Remember, “personal growth always comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.” ~ Forest Fisher ~ “The Water Ski Guy”

Now in the literal sense they were in over their head as the waves where much taller than they were, and still in the literal sense the wave gave them the push they needed to concur their hesitation and come out on the other end, triumphant.

As last weekend was Father’s Day it seems fitting to have a post about fatherhood. Over the weekend, son made me proud when he regained his #2 ranking in the US for his age group for competitive water skiing in the trick skiing event.

But my pride is less about his accomplishment of becoming ranked #2 in the country, than it is about his effort and determination that led him to this accomplishment.

See the same goes for my own skiing, in having become a six-time US National Gold Medalist and a bronze medalist at the world championships. Yes I am proud of my accomplishments, but what got me on to the podium was not what I did on that particular day in competition, it was the hours and years of preparation that led up to that moment.

This is also true for life and business. Yes, you deserve to and should recognize your accomplishments, and celebrate them. Though your success began before that moment. I suspect you can trace it back to a dream. In fact I often remind my coaching clients and my speaking audiences that “Success begins with a DREAM, and is realized by taking action.” – Forest Fisher – “The Water Ski Guy”

So in keeping with the theme of Father’s Day I encourage everyone, not just fathers, to encourage and praise children that you are blessed to be exposed to for their efforts as well as their accomplishments.

Over the weekend I started applying a new technique I learnt while reading “The Talent Code” by Daniel Coyle. As many of you know I was a professional water skier, a water ski coach and am now a motivational speaker, author and life/business coach. As such I am always looking for ways to better help my clients. Which in part is why I got so excited about this book.

This weekend I applied what was explained through one of the case studies while coaching my children. Instead of telling them how well they did, I focused on how hard they worked to accomplish what they had done.

The rational is that if praised for their accomplishment children learn that doing well is what will get them recognition. The study also found that over time children who are praised for their accomplishment tend to become more conservative out of what is implied as fear of not doing well and thus are afraid to fail. This is compared to praising children for their effort. As a result they learn that working harder is what will earn them recognition. Because of the mental model that is developed, failure becomes acceptable which is important because we often learn more from our failures than our successes, and this facilitates accelerated learning.

While coaching my children, I focused on praising their effort instead of the accomplishment. The result was amazing. In a very short time I saw them begin to work harder and focus more on the task at hand, and the result was accelerated success. They also appeared to have more fun and demonstrated a greater sense of accomplishment.

This is consistent with one of my own sayings, “success is getting up more times than you fall down.” – Forest Fisher – “The Water Ski Guy”

When I train to win the gold medal in water skiing, like I was last weekend, I take my wedding ring off for safety reasons. Last weekend I forgot to take it off ahead of time so I put it in the boat instead of in its regular place. Needless to say, Monday morning I went to rub my ring finger with my thumb, I guess I do this subconsciously a lot, all of a sudden I realized my wedding ring was missing.

The thought process started like this… Where is my ring? Why is it not on my finger?… Then it dawned on me what had happened and all of a sudden I knew exactly were it was. It was in the left cup holder, in our boat, at my training facility, 90 miles away. At first I was really bummed that I would have to go all week without my ring. Then the sadness turned to joy because the absence of my ring was actually a stronger reminder of my marriage.

Why? Because I had grown accustom to having the ring on my finger so its presence had actually become less significant than its absence. All week I would rub my thumb against my ring finger as if to adjust my ring and each time I would think about my wonderful marriage. Not to say that our marriage is perfect, but rather that it is a work in progress.

With a little bit of mental training and an adjusted mindset, you can turn sadness into joy. It is kind of like the saying, “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” This is true for all sorts of things. Instead of focusing on the loss, focus on the memory of what was joyous. With practice it takes less effort and occurs more naturally, and in no time you’ll feel a more frequent sense of joy.

I have had the good fortune to work with some great mentors and coaches. My sales training coach, Eric Lofholm, has a saying, “Move at the speed of instruction.” While my speaking business coach, James Malinchak says, “G.S.D.F. – Get Stuff Done Fast!”. I strive to apply both of these concepts in my daily life.

Yesterday near the end of the day I was FaceBook chatting with my water ski coach, Camilo Espinel, when he recommended a book, “The Talent Code”. Because of these concepts, I jumped into action right away. In fact before we had finished our FaceBook chat, I had found the book on Audible and downloaded it to my iPhone to begin listening to it in the car on my way home.

The book is a great source of information on how talent is developed and how to accelerate the process. I have found the book particularly interesting because it is providing the scientific backing and explanation as to why the method I used to become a Six-Time Gold Medalist and the method I use to mold my coaching clients into champions (both in sports and business) has been so successful. See out of my own trial and error I developed the same process that has produced extraordinary results in hot-beds around the world. This added insight will only make me more effective in helping my life-coaching and business-coaching clients to reach even higher levels of success as well as to help my children succeed as well.
